How I Can Help

If there’s one thing I learned in academia, it’s how helpful it can be to have someone around whose job it is to provide guidance, answer questions, provide accountability, and be a sounding board for problems ranging from the emotional (I can’t do this!) to the practical (How can I untangle this argument?).

In graduate school, we called them advisors or directors, but outside of graduate school they go by names like mentor or coach. And outside of graduate school, we often have to create those relationships ourselves.

I love providing people with guidance, hope, accountability, and such answers as I have. Below I list the products and services I currently offer, but if you need something that isn’t listed here, please email me and I’ll see what I might be able to do.

Choosing Your Career Consciously: Expanding your sense of career possibilities. 6 week teleclass with Julie and Jo VanEvery.

When we think about what we might do after academia, we tend to go one of two ways: I’m trained for this and therefore I can’t do anything else, or I could do anything! Neither approach gives us a workable set of career possibilities to explore. This class solves that dilemma through a structured examination of your skills, passions, and needs, what careers are out there now, and how you can bring the two together. Getting a Job Outside of Academia: Go beyond the resume to a system that works for you. 6 week teleclass.

People say finding a job is a full-time job in and of itself. But exactly how do you spend 40 hours a week sending out resumes? Answer: You don’t. There’s a lot more to a successful job search than resumes. This class gives you a structured system that includes (and explains!) looking for openings in places you wouldn’t expect, creating job materials beyond the resume, networking, interviewing, and negotiating. Writing the Job Application: Documenting your fabulousness. One master resume; targeted resumes and cover letters as needed.

It’s hard to sit down and remember all the ways you might be qualified for a particular job – and it’s easy to forget key experiences that would prove just how right you are for the position. A master resume solves that problem, but writing a master resume can run into the same problems. Through an extensive questionnaire combined with a one-hour phone call, I pull all those details out of you and create a comprehensive master resume to support your application process. One on One Coaching: When you need personalized help and support. Coaching by phone or email.

It can be hard to apply general principles to our specific situation. It can be hard to provide ourselves with accountability when we’re doing something scary, like leaving academia. It can be hard to figure out what we want. It can be hard to distinguish between the sadness of transition and the internal resistance that means this is a bad choice. One on one coaching can help you with all of these problems and more in confidence. Click here for more details.
